Happy Mother's Day from Heart of Haiti

No one likes being told or made to do something they don't want to do. Right? Well, when the Clever Girls asked me to name, "A Woman to Help You" I didn't immediately jump to say my mother, much as I love her. Mom was definitely on the list, the very first name I scrawled down, but I did think of other women that have helped me in some way in my life.

So, back to being made to do something that I didn't want to.

Ideas for a Royal Wedding Viewing Party

Is anyone else planning on watching the royal wedding, or hosting a royal wedding viewing party?

Over the weekend the family started talking about the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Neither of the twins really even knew about the wedding or were watching any of the news surrounding the event, but Missy and I have been following the news off and on.

Because we planned on doing a movie night this Friday anyway, Audrey Hepburn, and doing things we have never done before-- a la Breakfast at Tiffany's-- we decided that instead we would have a royal wedding viewing party.

Offers, Deals & Steals! 4/23/11

Seems it is time for another installment of Offers, Deals and Steals, especially since I have not been able to put one together for a couple weeks now. There is no lack of deals out there, it just seems that lately I have been catching all of them right before they expire and without any time to share.

Coupons and coupon sites are popping up all over the place as more and more people are realizing and seeing how much money they can save. With that said, I have a lot of coupon related deals for everyone, and a giveaway!

Sweet Potato Candy Recipe aka Camotitos Poblanos

My mom was confused when I was more excited about making camotito candy (sweet potato candy or camotitos poblanos, in Spanish) than Macarrones, or sweet milk fudgy logs, because growing up, and still now, I will choose a macarrone over camotito.  I came clean and confessed that the only reason I did that growing up was because I knew my mom would always take camote, so this way I would get to enjoy my milk fudge and steal a bite of her camote :)

I'm not gonna lie...I still do it!

Business2Blogger, Where Brands Find Bloggers

A lot of my current email has been about the different blogging networks that I am involved with. So, I thought it might be a good idea to share the networks that I am a member of and how each one works for me.

Business2Blogger is one of those blogging networks, and the one I want to talk about this week. I have been a member for a little over a year, I believe another blogger introduced me, and in that time the program has changed little, but it has definitely grown.

Not Extreme, But Smart Couponing

With all the noise around TLC's new show, Extreme Couponing, I have noticed the different reactions that I have received at the grocery store when trying to use coupons myself. Cashiers and managers are more cautious because more customers are using coupons and not aware of store policies. At one store the cashier called the manager over from the service desk to let her know she had coupons, closed the aisle and the cashier, manager and one other clerk went through the coupons and groceries together.

More Tees, Please: TShirt Printing

When I was in college we had custom made Tshirts done up all the time, but we always went with someone different each time because it was impossible to get shirt orders the way that we wanted.  I wish I knew about TShirtPrinting.net back then because I loved the shirt the website sent me as an example of their work.

Yanni: Truth of Touch Album Review

Yanni is one of those artists I grew up listening to, my dad enjoys his concerts, so whenever there was a new concert airing on PBS we watched with Dad.  In fact, I did so just a few weeks ago, and Dad asked me to check and see if he was coming to Chicago following the release of the album, Truth of Touch.

What To Do With a Raccoon Graveyard?

We have the pleasure of living right next to a forest preserve that travels all the way to the River, our creek joins it eventually. This also means that we have a lot of wildlife running around, friends refer to it as the Zoo. The other day the kids told me about this really weird discovery that they stumbled on just next to the open fence, on the way to the creek, and after checking it out I have the heebie jeebies.

There is this huge, disgusting raccoon graveyard sitting out there! No kidding.

Should More Farmer's Markets Accept SNAP?

I saw a short piece in a small, local paper regarding the acceptance of SNAP at one of the local farmer's markets. I didn't know what SNAP was till I read the piece, and I am not sure if it is called by the same name across the country, but SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or what was once called Food Stamps.

Even though we no longer have our co-op, 75% of our grocery shopping is fresh produce and when we can buy local, we do. Because of this we grocery shop once every week, and frequent our local and nearby farmer's markets during the summer. On these grocery trips, I am amazed by the amount of dead food that other folks buy.

Wholly Guacamole Buddy Up and Win Contest & Giveaway

A couple months back Wholly Guacamole sent me their new guac snack packs to sample, along with their line of salsa, cheese and guacamole.  We loved all of it, which really surprised me because usually the family turns up their noses at guac and salsa that is not made by my mom, but they ate all the salsa and everyone loved the guacamole!
